Merritt, B.C., nłeʔképmx Territory – The Citxw Nlaka’pamux Assembly (CNA) is excited to announce it has purchased 15.4 acres of land at 3299 River Ranch Road in Merritt. The property creates space for CNA and its eight Participating Bands to consider future opportunities together, guided by the voices and priorities of nłeʔképmx.
CNA secured external funding for this land purchase through sources specifically intended to support initiatives that align with our vision. This funding allows CNA to pursue opportunities that will generate long-term economic growth for our communities while ensuring decisions remain rooted in nłeʔképmx values.
By investing in land, CNA is building on today’s economic growth to create a strong foundation for future development. By advancing projects that support current needs and projected opportunities, CNA is strengthening nłeʔképmx economies in sustainable and meaningful ways. These efforts not only deliver benefits for our people today but also ensure long-term prosperity, reinforcing the ability of to guide and shape development within our own territory for generations to come.
“This land was purchased with the well-being of our people in mind,” said Chief Lee Spahan of Coldwater, Director on the CNA Board. “It gives us an opportunity to sit down together and ask what will best serve our communities now and for the generations still to come. We will move forward in a way that is respectful, careful, and true to nłeʔképmx values.”
Chief Christine Walkem of Cook’s Ferry, Chair of the CNA Board, emphasized the importance of unity and cultural reconnection in shaping the future.
“The strength of the nłeʔképmx comes from standing together and reconnecting with the teachings, language, and land that define us. This property is not about a single vision, but about creating shared possibilities that honour who we are as a people. Guided by our culture and our responsibility to future generations, we will move forward in a way that restores balance, strengthens identity, and ensures that what we build is rooted in nłeʔképmx values.”
CNA Executive Director Nicole Johnny said the purchase reflects CNA’s responsibility to ensure nłeʔképmx are leading decisions about land in their territory. “This is an important step for CNA. But more important than the purchase itself is the process that will follow as we do the work to identify a path that reflects nłeʔképmx priorities and values.
Chief Fred Sampson of Siska underscored the cultural and spiritual significance:
“Our ancestors have always taught us that the land is sacred, carrying the stories of those who came before and the responsibility to those who will come after. This property is a reminder that our strength comes from honouring those teachings. As we look to the future, we must ensure every decision respects the spirit of the land and the cultural responsibilities we hold as nłeʔképmx.”
CNA will provide updates to its Participating Bands as this initiative develops. CNA’s Board recognizes that land carries not only economic potential but cultural and spiritual responsibility. Decisions about its future will honour the teachings of nłeʔképmx and the responsibility to provide for generations still to come.
